  1. Grid connected solar power – this is by far the most common and the cheapest

How Many Panels Do I Need And How Big Are The Panels?

Residential solar panels come in different sizes and with different power outputs. The most common panel size at the moment is 250W and these are about 1,000 x 1,700 mm in size (w x h).

How many panels you need depends on your system size. There are 4 panels required for each “kW” of solar. So for a 5kW system, you need 20 panels.

What Are The Parts Of A Residential Solar Power System And Where Do They Go?

There are 4 main parts to a residential solar power system:

  1. Solar panels – these should be put on the North-facing roof of your dwelling if possible. Otherwise East & West may also be used but will have system losses.
  2. Solar inverter – this is a box which changes the DC power from the panels into AC power. It should be placed in a well-shaded, ventilated area (preferably indoors). It should also be as close to your meter board as possible.
  3. Solar racking – the solar panels need to be mounted on racks designed to hold solar panels. These go on your roof and the panels are fixed to them.
  4. Electrical cabling etc. – some other electrical cabling and labels are needed for your solar power system. DC cable is used between your panels and the inverter and AC cable is needed between your inverter and your switchboard.

How Do I Maintain My Residential Solar System?

Very little maintenance is needed with a solar power system. You should clean your panels around twice each year to make sure you get the most out of them, and check your inverter regularly to ensure it is working well.
