What is the SMA Sunny Home Manager?

The SMA Sunny Home Manager is a home solar management system. It looks at what the solar is doing. Then it looks at what your power use is doing. Then it makes sure your system is working the best it can. It’s freakin’ awesome.

This system has 2 pieces really:

  1. The SMA Sunny Home Manager Data Router
  2. The SMA Energy Meter
  3. Up to 10 radio controlled power sockets

This is the data router part of the system.

This is a radio controlled power socket (not available in Australia)

Then of course it has software, from which you can control and monitor stuff.

What does the SMA Sunny Home Manager Do & Why Do I Need It?

Here are some of the things this little beauty can do:

  • Controls up to 10 power outlets in your home SMA have (for the moment) scrapped this idea for Australia and are working on controlling “smart devices” instead.
  • Easy, online monitoring
  • Makes recommendations on when to use your power
  • Limit grid export (sending power out of your home) to as low as 10%

Why is this cool and why am I so excited about it that I can’t stop rambling?

This is a simple diagram to show how the SMA Sunny Home Manager works.

Well, it pretty much does what we all wish solar could just do on it’s own. Yep – it matches your power use with your solar power. Not perfectly, but still a LOT better than a standard PV system would do. This means you save more money and don’t have to worry about your power use.

This picture shows the data router and a single socket (with Euro plug-holes – not available in Aus).

What makes the SMA Sunny Home Manager better than other solar monitoring setups?

Well, for one it is not just a monitoring system, it’s a management system. This means that it actually decides for you when to turn stuff off if needed to save you big coin. A standard solar monitoring setup would just show you what is being produced. This one, shows you:

  • How much power is produced
  • How much power you are using and
  • How much power is being sent to the grid

So Should I Get One? Wait A Minute, Can I Even Get One?

Unfortunately this product is not yet available in Australia, although SMA tell me it’s extremely close to being released. Update 17th June, 2014: The Sunny Home Manager is now available in Australia although the socket plugs are not. Frowny face :(. So if you love it enough, you gotta get the plugs from Germany and switch them to Aussie plugs And if you’ve got an SMA inverter then yes, you should get one of these I reckon. It’ll save you even more money. Unsure on the price tag but I’d hazard a guess at somewhere between the $500 – $800 mark.
